Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I’m still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind
I’m still standing (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

Elton John came rattling through his windows this morning well before sunrise. He got up to look for its source, but his gaze fell upon an empty street below. Nothing. Just another hallucination. He hadn’t had them for a while now. Not since he quit drinking. He smiled. This was oddly appropriate. He had been sober now for six months to the day. In Elton’s biopic “Rocketman” the song was presented as a celebration of Elton overcoming his addictions, but apparently he was drunk as fuck during the video shoot at Cannes, at one point drinking martinis all day with the boys from Duran Duran.

He went to the kitchen and made coffee, dropping in a dollop of coconut oil and sat down to write. It was Easter. He considered writing about Easter themes but nothing seemed appropriate. He had let himself sleep-in and now his mind was a blank. The few words he did manage to write came out difficult and the keyboard fought him every step of the way. “Just get it done,” he thought, “and maybe go for a walk. I wonder if church is open?”

His thoughts moved to the redemptive cycle of Hercules, who killed his beloved wife and children in a fit of rage brought on by a vengeful Hera. His famous labors were a direct result of his trying to make amends and seeking penance for that deed. In the end, he immolates himself on a pyre of his own making before Zeus brings him up to Olympus to sit with the Gods for all eternity.
